Tam Coc Friends Bungalow sits in Dam Khe, in the Tam Coc–Bich Dong area of Ninh Binh, about 100 kilometres south of Hanoi. Most travellers arrive by train or road. Trains from Hanoi reach Ninh Binh station in roughly two to two-and-a-half hours, and the homestay is a short 10-minute, seven-kilometre taxi ride from there. Tourist vans, limousines and minibuses also run door-to-door from Hanoi in around two to three hours, while a private car takes a similar time. The nearest international gateway is Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport, about two hours away by road; regional Tho Xuan Airport is a little closer. Once you are here, the flat country lanes are made for cycling, and the hosts lend bikes for free. Around the village, walking and ride-hailing apps such as Grab are handy, though a bicycle is by far the nicest way to reach the boat piers and temples.
You are within easy reach of Ninh Binh's headline sights. The Tam Coc boat pier is a short walk away, where sampans glide along the Ngo Dong River through three caves and, in season, glowing rice fields. Bich Dong Pagoda, a three-tier temple built into the hillside, is about a kilometre off, and the peaceful Thai Vi Temple sits among the paddies close by. For the classic panorama, climb the roughly 500 steps at Hang Mua, some three kilometres away. Further out lie the UNESCO-listed Trang An boat complex and Hoa Lu, Vietnam's tenth-century capital. Closer to home, Thung Nham Bird Park makes a rewarding half-day, at its best around dusk when thousands of birds return to roost. The most magical time is the rice harvest in late May and early June, when the valley turns gold; April brings lush green, and the cooler, drier months are ideal for cycling. Set out early or after mid-afternoon to dodge the midday heat and the biggest crowds.
